Statement by Godfrey Smith, CEO, Hutchison Port Holding Business Units
[Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Thursday, 28th July 2015] - We at Hutchison Port Holdings Business Units are proud to have supported the official launch of the Mychal Thompson Foundation staged this past weekend in the Eight Mile Rock Community, Grand Bahama. The Foundation’s aim to see young people excel through academics and athletics coincides with our corporate community efforts. We find Mychal Thompson’s hands on approach to inspire young people to be their very best commendable. He is by all measures a sports icon and great Bahamian son. For years we have admired the work of the Foundation’s CEO, Fred Sturrup, as a prolific sports writer. In our view, his leadership involvement with the foundation goes beyond his pen and depicts an impressive personal dedication. The warm welcome given to Mychal Thompson by the people of Grand Bahama during his successful launch and the excitement laced on the faces of the young participants speak volumes of the Foundation’s early impact. We are confident that the Mychal Thompson Foundation will realize continued success. HPH Business Units remain committed to those programs and activities that contribute to the building of stronger communities and a better Bahamas for all.
As a final and personal note, I am particularly delighted that the event’s organizers decided on West Grand Bahama for the official launch. Often the children and residents living outside of the Freeport area are seemingly disadvantaged and deprived of such wonderful opportunities. Whatever my state and or status in life, I am always humbly mindful of my Eight Mile Rock roots and my early educational journey in West Grand Bahama.
