[Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Friday, 14th August 2015] –  Three Grand Bahama-based high school students are “overjoyed and excited” about this new school year set to begin August 31.  Nahson Jones of Jack Hayward Junior High, Charlencia Forbes of Eight Mile Rock High, and Samia Rampersad of Sister Mary Patricia Junior High have all received High School Scholarships to attend Bishop Michael Eldon School, Freeport, for their final three years, grades 10 through 12, from Hutchison Port Holdings Bahamas Business Units.

Local students from the three middle schools on Grand Bahama were invited to submit their credentials and an essay by HPH Business Units Scholarship Committee Board, and in what has been described as “an extremely tight competition”, Jones, Forbes, and Rampersad topped a significant number of candidates. During the official announcement and presentation back in July of this year, committee members said they were so impressed with those vying forthe scholarships, management was forced to present three runner-ups with cutting edge laptops as consolation prizes.  David Major, Jack Hayward Junior High, Cody Rolle, Eight Mile Rock High, and Lashaunna Williams of Sister Mary Patricia Junior High are the laptop recipients.

Commenting on the students being awarded scholarships to attend Bishop Michael Eldon School, veteran educator and principal, Anita Doherty, said as the school celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is great to welcome new talented students to the “Warriors Family” and that BMES has a rich history of excellence driven by teachers and students of diverse backgrounds. She commended Hutchison Bahamas Business Units for continuing to be “corporate giants, genuinely interested in what is best for our communities and in particular our young people.”

In a statement issued by HPH Business Units, CEO, Godfrey Smith, says; “These High School Scholarships and prizes serve as a further testament of our companies’ commitment to the positive growth and development of our young people.  All of the candidates and award recipients represent HPH Business Units’ future and the future of the Bahamas. We are extremely impressed by the high standards, tremendous quality of work and achievements linked to our students and noted during the selection process. We are optimistic and confident that based on the determination and goal oriented visions outlined by our scholarship winners, they will all take full advantage of the opportunities being presented and will do well at Bishop Michael Eldon School and beyond.

To create a first world country and or corporate entity, we believe, there must be a keen focus placed on education and training. We are so delighted to play a role in the educational journey and advancement of these most deserving students.  They rank among our nation’s best and brightest. Our Scholarship Committee members will monitor the progress of our recipients and will remain available to assist with their high school efforts. We take this opportunity to commend the proud parents and encourage them to continue to be involved in their children’s academic pursuits. Again, congratulations to all our candidates and winners and HPH Bahamas Business Units wish them continued success during this school year. We remind our students that there is no substitute for consistent studying and hard work.”
